The Shipwreck is on the north of the island at Porto Vromi. The story is that 20 years ago, a freighter was pursued by the Greek Navy. The crew were suspected of smuggling contraband and the Navy chased the ship through the Ionian sea. Allegedly there was 'wine, tabacco and women' on board and the chase came to an abrupt end when the ship ran aground in stormy weather. The locals are rumoured to have been smoking Marlboro cigerettes for a long time after... |

The Blue Caves are situated at Aspros Vrahos of Krimnos, on the Skinari cape, which is the most northern part of the island, 35 km from the town of Zakynthos. The biggest of the caves is the famous Blue Grotto which entrance was discovered in 1897. In the deeper caverns, you have the feeling that everything under the waters - the rocks, the keel of the boat, the body of a swimmer - reflects a bright blue hue. It's utterly beautiful! |
Caretta-Caretta Turtles swim all the way from Africa to Zakynthos to lay their eggs in Zakynthos every year. The best time to see them is between May & July. The main area for turtle spotting is the Laganas Bay and this comprises of the beach resorts of Laganas & Kalamaki. The turtles a big and very beautiful. From Laganas beach you can take a turtle trip from a hut outside the Golden Sands beach bar. This is a short walk down the left-hand side of the beach off the end of the main road. The great thing about these trips is that you are guaranteed to see a turtle, or you get your money back! If you go on holiday later on in the season it is possible to see the eggs hatch in September. If you would like to go turtle spotting, then it's advisable to get in touch with the Turtle Protection League on Kalamaki beach and ask to accompany them one morning, as the beach is restricted to people at certain times in order to leave the Turtles undisturbed. |

A Trip Round the Island is a great way to see a lot of what Zakynthos has on offer in just one day. You can do this in two ways. You can take a boat trip, or go on a Zakfari - in a jeep, over land. You can get these trips from many tour operators in resort or from your holiday company, however check first to see what you'll get to visit in each one, as they can vary. Island Tours can cost anything from 4,000-10,000 drachmas (8-20). |
Cephalonia in the island directly North of Zakynthos. It has become more popular of late to go there due to the fact that during summer 2000, Nick Cage was there for the filming of Captain Carrelli's Mandolin. However, Cephalonia is a very peaceful and very beautiful Island and there are many trips available from Zakynthos. Pictured is one of Cephalonia's most beautiful natural wonders - Melisani Lake. This was an underwater lake until the great earthquake loosened the land above and this hole appeared. The water is icy and very blue. |

Athens is the Capital City of Greece and only 4-5 hours away by coach. Some Tour Operators do 2-day trips over to the city and put you up in a top class hotel so you can have more time to look around the amazing archaeological sites. The 2-day trips to the Capital cost around 20-30,000 drachmas (40-60), but if you're feeling really flash, you could nip into town and book a flight for around 40,000 drachmas and jet off... Remember, Athens is hosting the 2004 Olympics. If you want to go, you'll have to book very early! |
Home of the very firsty Olympics, Olympia is another historical site not to be missed. A dya trip will take you by ferry & coach to the famous site where you will get a guided tour of the ruins.
