| Zakynthos Town | Bochali Hill | Macherado | St. Nicholas Beach |

Zakynthos Town is the capital of the island. There are many things to do & see here, enough for a least a day of cultural sightseeing or even shopping!

Situated on the main harbour, there are rows of restaurants on the sea front where you can relax your feet and have a coffee, or even get a more substaintial meal down your throat while you watch the fishermen repair their nets after catching your lunch!

If you are holidaying over the 24 August, you have the opportunity to see one of the highlights of the year. This is St. Dennis Day & the town becomes one big festival. A market comes over from the mainland for about a week prior to the celebrations and stalls selling local delicacies line the streets. The festivities cumulate in the procession of St. Dennis, the mumified patron saint of the island, from his resting place at the church in Macherado to the church of Dionysos in Zakynthos Town.

If you want to do some shopping then check out the Alexandra Roma. This is a street parallel to the Harbour Road, but set a few blocks inland. You can't miss it, as it's chock-a-block with shops. There's even a Body Shop here. Try and buy jewelry here, instead of in resort. Gold from tourist shops can sometimes be of lower quality, however the stuff from the shops in town is really nice and usually comes with a guarantee. This road comes out a Solomos Square where there are just loads of cafes to chill out, rest your feet & have a coffee (try a baileys frappe).

There are some lovely restaurants in the Town, but there are also some bad ones too. It's pot luck really, though a bit of advice is to stay away from the ones which have an insistant bloke outside who virtually drags you in. If you fancy taking a stroll along the costal road, as long as you keep the sea on your right hand side you can't miss a most fabulous restaurant called The Green Boat. Alternatively, if you can't be bothered walking you could jump in a cab, but the food here is amazing. If you like seafood you must give it a try, as the Kalamari is the best I've ever had... and believe me, I've had a lot! The setting is lovely too. The tables are right on the edge of the sea overlooking the town.

Bochali Hill is just above Zakynthos Town. The views of the town from this place are just beautiful. It is worth getting the short taxi ride up the hill in order to get some outstanding photos of your own.

There's also some lovely restaurants and ice-cream parlours up here which makes for a really delicious snack.

Macherado is a small village in the centre of the island. It is famous for the Church of the Black Madonna. Zakynthians believe that if they offer precious things to the Madonna, she will keep their family healthy. This is why the church is covered in Gold inside.

A visit here is a most amazing site. It's worth a trip out here just to get a look at the beauty of this church. It is also a very holy site on the island.

St. Nicolas' Beach is an ideal day out for all the family. Situated on the peninsula of Vassilikos, and famous for it's watersports there's something to do for everyone.

A free bus goes from most resorts up to St. Nick's and will bring you back at the end of the day, so no big taxi fares! If you want to know when & where the bus stops in your resort, just ask any of the bar owners or workers and they should be able to help... It's quite a well-known thing!

The golden sands are great to relax on, alternatively you can hire a sunbed for about 1000drx a day. The sea is clear & blue and if you fancy a beer or a snack, there's a beach bar to cater for your every need.
